Article: Improving Test Performance

Recently I worked with a young woman in the US that I'll call Claire (not her real name). Claire wants to do an MBA at a good business school and was concerned that her GMAT scores wouldn't be good enough. (GMAT is the standardized test for business school admission, like MCAT for medical school, and GRE for grad school.) Claire had been studying for the GMAT for many months and taken many practice tests, so she had a pretty good idea of what her score would be if she didn't clear some of her challenges with taking tests. At her current level, she wouldn't get into the calibre of school that she wanted.

I asked Claire what happens when she takes the practice tests and these are the phrases she used: "I panic... When I read the questions, I just freeze like a deer in the headlights... I can't seem to take the word problem and figure out the formulas I need to use... I know this material really well, but I just can't seem to sort out what to do in the moment..."

As Claire continued to discuss how she felt, it became apparent that there were a lot of different aspects to her test performance problem. So we just started working with them one by one, using EFT with the statements above and any other words that came up.

"Even though when I read the questions, I panic and just freeze like a deer in the headlights, I deeply and completely accept myself." Tap, tap, tap.... After a few rounds, Claire brought it from an intensity of about 7 (out of 10) when she imagined the scenario, down to zero.

"Even though I can't seem to take the word problem and figure out the formulas I need to use..." Tap, tap, tap... Again, after a few rounds, she brought it from an intensity of about 7 when she imagined the scenario down to zero.

We did this with all of the aspects Claire could think of. By the end of the session, Claire didn't feel any panic at all when she imagined doing the test questions -- "I feel pretty good about doing the test." She suggested that she take another practice test and see how she did. If there were any more issues that came up, she had time to have another session before her big test.

Claire called me a few days later and told me that she could feel a big difference in her response to the test questions, specifically that the panic she used to feel had pretty much disappeared. However, when she read the test questions, now she felt very thick-headed and slow to figure out how to answer the questions.

Once again we started with her words for the problem, "Even though I feel very thick-headed and slow to figure out the probleem..." tap, tap, tap. Even after a couple of rounds, when she imagined the scenario of doing the practice test, the "thick-headedness" didn't decrease. So I asked her what would happen if she did really, really, really well in this test, and was incredibly successful?

After exploring many downsides and upsides of being really successful, Claire tapped on several of the statements that emerged. This helped, and her "thick-headedness" reduced when she imagined doing the test questions, but then hit a plateau and wouldn't budge.

So there was still something we weren't getting at, and I asked Claire, "Who would be threatened if you're very successful?" She identified several people and said, "I know it's not really true, but it feels as if they'll reject me if I'm successful." She tapped for several rounds using the phrase "Even though I'm afraid they'll reject me if I'm successful..." and similar phrases and once again she imagined the test scenario. This time she felt clear-headed and able to work out the test problems.

At this point we had spent a lot of time and effort clearing out the negative, and it was time to "install" some positive stuff! I asked Claire to imagine how she wanted to feel and perform. She said "I want to feel calm and confident before and during the test, and I get a great test score." So she used the Choices version of EFT and tapped with the phrase "I choose to feel calm and confident before and during the test, and I get a great test score."

Two days later I heard from Claire who announced that she had got a great result on her big test, the real one, not a practice test! "I got a 700 (out of 800)!" she exclaimed. "That's a hundred points higher than I did on any of the practice tests. It's a good enough score that I should be able to get into any of the business schools that I want".

Congratulations to Claire!

Cheers,
Nina.

Introduction to Tapas Acupressure Technique (TAT) or "TAT Basics"
Saturday + Sunday, Nov. 21-22, in Toronto

Tapas Acupressure Technique or TAT is a meditative healing method which was originally developed by Tapas Fleming, an acupuncturist, to treat allergies. But TAT isn't only for allergies! TAT is incredibly effective at relieving many other physical problems which are affected by stress, such as headaches, body pains, breathing difficulties, and skin and digestive disorders. TAT is also superb at freeing yourself of emotional issues, dispelling negative beliefs, and healing trauma and the after effects of trauma (PTSD). (As you may be able to tell, I am a big fan of TAT).

In this introductory workshop you’ll learn the basics of TAT and how it works. You’ll get lots of practice using TAT and learn how to apply it to a variety of types of problems, as well as see demos which will help you gain insight into more intuitive and creative uses of TAT. You’ll go away with the confidence to apply these techniques immediately in your daily life and work. For more information on this workshop, Check here.
