Article: Healing Never Really Lasts for Me

This is a longer article than usual because it summarizes two sessions. Sorry for the length, but I hope you'll find it interesting, as it shows how important it may be to clear up a core belief like "Healing never lasts for me" before you actually work on the specific problem.

Recently I had a telephone session with a new client I'll call Paula who wanted work on two problems: chronic back pain and also generalized anxiety. After telling me about these issues, Paula also mentioned that “Healing never lasts for me. I get some relief for awhile, but then I lose the healing benefits.” She said she was afraid that this pattern would continue and she wouldn't get permanent benefits from our work together.

I suggested that before we work on her specific issues (the anxiety and chronic back pain) we work on the "healing never lasts for me" issue. Intuitively it felt that we should use Tapas Acupressure Technique (TAT) so Paula held the TAT pose and focused on the phrase "healing never lasts for me". Paula reported that while doing that she had a memory arise: "When I was a a child during WW2 in England, promises never meant anything. It wasn't anybody's fault, it was just that it was wartime and people couldn't always do what they had promised."

We didn't really know how this connected with "healing never lasts for me" but trusted that there must be a connection or the memory wouldn't have arisen. I suggested Paula do TAT with the phrase "promises never mean anything" and then "it may not be entirely true that promises never mean anything." Paula's comment after this was "When anyone betrays a promise, I over-react, and I feel as if I'm being blown apart. Also, when I trust someone, I trust too much and then when they betray my trust I feel that same feeling, as if I'm exploding inside."

Again, not knowing all the connections, I just suggested Paula hold the TAT pose and put her attention on the phrase “All these betrayals”. Within a few moments, Paula announced: “It's my body betraying me” so she switched the TAT focus to “My body is betraying me.” I asked her how did she want to feel about her body and she said, "I trust that my body is strong and healthy." But when she held the TAT pose with that phrase, she felt too uncomfortable. Perhaps that was a bit too much of a stretch for her, so I suggested she use the phrase "I want to trust that my body is strong and healthy."

After this Paula said she felt much better about her body and said “It doesn't feel true anymore that my body is betraying me.”

Since she was on such a roll with TAT, I suggested we finish off the session with a bit of TAT on her "Anxiety Motor", which was her description of how her anxiety, once started, just kept on running interminably. The phrase we used was "Everything that contributed to this Anxiety Motor happened" then "All that happened, it's over now and I'm ok, and it no longer results in this anxiety motor." She then finished up with "I choose to feel calm and confident."

At this point we had run out of time, and we hadn't yet worked on her back pain, but Paula was comfortable with the fact that healing her anxiety and chronic back pain was a process that was going to take multiple sessions.

Paula's second session focused on her back pain which she reported as being pretty bad that day, about 7 or 8 on a 10 point scale. Paula felt there was an emotional reason for her back pain, because "there's nothing wrong on the X-rays" but she didn't know what it was. I told her this was not a problem. “We can work "it" even if we don't know what "it" is!”

Intuitively it felt that Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT i.e. tapping) would be useful here, although we could have used TAT as we had in the first session. Paula started with “Even though I don't know what it is, I know there's a really good reason for my back pain, and I deeply and completely accept myself.” tap, tap, tap... She did a few rounds of this, but her back pain was still pretty high. Hmmm....

I suggested Paula say the statement “It's not ok to clear this back pain” and see how true it felt to her. “At least a 6 out of 10”, she reported. “How big is the phrase "Pain is how I handle that emotion"?” I asked her. When she said it a few times, she reported that if felt like a 9 out of 10.

So Paula did EFT with the statement "Even though Pain is how I handle that emotion, I deeply and completely accept myself" tap, tap, tap... When there was no charge left on that statement, Paula then went back to “It's not ok to clear this back pain” and found that statement to have no charge left on it either. Cool, eh?

I then asked Paula to check the statement “It's not safe to clear this back pain” and she did a round of EFT to bring that down to zero. At this point I asked her how her back felt, she said it felt better, but there was still some pain. “How big is the phrase "Pain is how I handle that Second Emotion"?” I asked her. When she said it a few times, she reported that if felt like a 5 out of 10. Not as big as the for the first emotion, but big enough! So we cleared that the same way as for the first emotion. Because of time constraints, we had to end the session at this point.

About a month later Paula called to book another session. She reported that the "Anxiety Motor" was no longer present and her back pain was usually much less than before, but still a problem. Then she laughed and said, “But I've had this for about 25 years, you know, so it's ok if it takes a few more sessions.

Congratulations to Paula for persevering in her efforts to clear up such a long-standing problem.

Cheers,
Nina.

Introduction to Tapas Acupressure Technique (TAT) or "TAT Basics"
March 27-28, 2010 in Toronto

Tapas Acupressure Technique or TAT is a meditative healing method which was originally developed by Tapas Fleming, an acupuncturist, to treat allergies. But TAT isn't only for allergies! TAT is incredibly effective at relieving many other physical problems which are affected by stress, such as headaches, body pains, breathing difficulties, and skin and digestive disorders. TAT is also superb at freeing yourself of emotional issues, dispelling negative beliefs, and healing trauma and the after effects of trauma (PTSD). (As you may be able to tell, I am a big fan of TAT).

In this introductory workshop you’ll learn the basics of TAT and how it works. You’ll get lots of practice using TAT and learn how to apply it to a variety of types of problems, as well as see demos which will help you gain insight into more intuitive and creative uses of TAT. You’ll go away with the confidence to apply these techniques immediately in your daily life and work. For more information on this workshop, Check here.

Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) Workshops - Introductory and Intermediate Workshops

EFT works great for eliminating negative beliefs and reducing anxiety, depression, fears and phobias, cravings, and relieving all kinds of physical and emotional discomfort, dis-ease or pain. I use it all the time with my clients and on myself because it is so effective, easy to learn and use.

I feel that live workshops generate extraordinary benefits for all attendees. However, EFT is a very flexible process and thus this workshop represents the views of the presenter, Nina Bregman. Also due to time constraints, this training is not as complete as the standardized training offered at http://www.emofree.com.

I strongly encourage all workshop participants to broaden their EFT horizons by purchasing Gary Craig's training DVDs while they are still available (Check here).
